Superformance GT40 50th Anniversary Edition
In 1969, Ford finished the successful career of the GT40 with a fourth victory in a row at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Jacky Ickx crossed the finishing line with his car, painted in the famous Gulf livery, just meters in front of a Porsche 908. These victories at Le Mans and at various other racetracks worldwide justified the legendary status of the racing car and led to a high interest in replicas. Among the really good replicas are the vehicles from Superformance, who also replicate the Cobra and will shortly take up the production of the Ford GR-1 (we reported recently).
To mark the 50th anniversary of this final victory, Superformance is now setting up 50 copies of the GT40 in Mk I configuration as a continuation car. For this purpose, they cooperate with Safir GT40, another manufacturer of fine replicas, and the company Gulf Oil, to obtain the permission for the legendary livery including logos. They plan to produce 50 exact copies of the legendary winning car from 1969, chassis number P1075, which was the same car that won Le Mans in 1968 as well. To be as close to the original as possible, those new cars get the red signal lights in the front grille and behind the rear wheels as well, which were used to distinguish the different Gulf GT40s from the pit wall at night.
Below the racing style bodywork, there are some changes compared to the original, as Superformance uses modern components. For example, there are adjustable pedals to fit the car to different sized drivers. Added to that are Wilbrook brakes, H&R springs and Bilstein dampers for a modified suspension tuning.
Optionally, Superformance offers an equipment package called ‘Tool Room Reconfiguration’ including lexan windows and a race tank. In addition, this package interestingly includes an electric guitar in the same colors as the car. The vehicle itself comes without engine and gearbox, despite a base price of 179,995 US$. The Tool Room Reconfiguration package costs another 29,905 US$. Superformance also offers different V8 engines with matching five-speed transmissions.
